Why can I measure things in metres with a projected coordinate system?
When I use a geographic coordinate system I can only measure distance in degrees, whereas in a projected coordinate system I cannot measure in degrees but in metres or feet or some other unit of measure. Why is this?
In geographic coordinate system, unit of distance measurement is degrees (or degree-min-sec, etc) which is angular distance, not a planner distance. Meter (or foot) is the unit of distance measurement for only planner coordinate system. Since a projected coordinate system is a planner coordinate system so you can measure distance in meters or in feet.
